My Math Story

Describe an experience (or more than one) that helped you discover/cultivate your interest in the mathematical sciences.

In grade school I would get in trouble for being talkative/distracting after finishing my work so I began doing my sibling's math problems to challenge myself and stay occupied.

What motivated you to study mathematics at Ohio State?

I originally wanted to study Aerospace Engineering, but after transferring, the application process for the major was poorly explained and I chose mathematics as it has broad applications and usage. Additionally, meeting Professor John Johnson was instrumental in completing my degree despite wanting to give up at various points.

How has your math degree influenced your life after graduation?

I landed my first job because I had a math background, though they were looking more for a finance person. I eventually joined the Biomedical Engineering PhD program and having my math training covered part of not being a formal engineer and has also been helpful through various parts of life in a research lab.

What personal or professional accomplishment(s) are you most proud of?

Completing undergrad despite dealing with many personal issues and learning to believe in myself again to take the chance to apply to graduate school and now be a semester from completing my PhD.
